Faouzia: An up-and-coming artist

The Moroccan-Canadian singer, Faouzia, recently won a YouTube Music award for being Canada's First Artist on the Rise. At only 20 years old, she is starting to break through the music industry and has already collaborated with the likes of David Guetta and Kelly Clarkson. With over 2.9 million monthly listeners on Spotify, her music continues to become even more popular.

Released in 2019, the single sends out an important message, that what other people think of you does not matter. Faouzia wanted to show people that no one knows what you have been through or who you truly are. The official music video has over 15 million views. This is not surprising considering its creative editing and staging.

Released as part of her new EP, Stripped, this song resonated with a lot of fans. Especially the lyric, 'I'd rather be heartless than have my heart in pieces'. While promoting her new song on Instagram, she shared a post captioned 'hurt people hurt people'. The message behind this song is powerful. The simplicity of the performance video allows her voice to radiate as well as displaying the strong emotional connection that she has with the song.

In an interview with Genius, Faouzia said that the chorus of this song was made very quickly, after previously struggling to connect with anything. She also discussed the meaning behind the song, how we can give so much to one person and not receive anything back. But, despite this we continue to keep going back to that person. Her advice: "Be giving to people who are also giving to you."

Minefields was originally written by Sam Martin, Faouzia said that she fell in love with the song after listening to it for the first time. Although Faouzia rewrote the song, the 'main essence' stayed the same. Surprisingly, the song was recorded in the basement of her home using a microphone that she had from the age of 12. The song was meant to be a solo piece, however, she thought having a male voice within the song would fit well. One of the names that came up was Grammy-winning John Legend. Soon after reaching out he accepted the collaboration. This song has proven to be a huge success with the lyric video already achieving 4.2 million views. The official music video is being released today.

Faouzia has quickly become my new favourite artist. All of her songs have such powerful meanings behind them, if you haven't listened to any of her songs then you need to. Now.
